Have you ever had a piece of clothing that just didn’t fit right and you still are hanging on to it?
I have this problem. Just last night I was trying to wear jeans that are so uncomfortable! The sad thing is I knew this when I bought them! I just lied to myself and believed I would alter my hips a little and they would work. It’s been 8 months since I purchased them and I have worn them once! I just finally decided last night it was time for them to go! I know I can’t be the only one that does this, but why? Why do we try to alter who we are to make something work?
For instance, if you are a Christ follower and find yourself holding on to compromise, you’re trying to squeeze yourself into a deeper relationship with God that will NOT FIT! Your compromise may seem unavoidable, so you still try to make it work. When we do this, we have failed to grasp the true understanding of freedom in Christ! Just the same way I CHOSE to buy the jeans that just didn’t fit, you’ll find that as you “work out your salvation with fear and trembling,” some things just won’t fit into your life. That is the freedom that God gives us….the freedom to love God more than the things that trip you up. Choose to shed the unwanted “weights that so easily beset us,” and your relationship with God will be a perfect fit. If you are dragging a weight behind, let it go!
Another instance that happened to me a few weeks ago, kept me up all night. I lost sleep over something that was so ill-fitting for my life. Sometimes we invite issues in, whether it be listening to someone else’s problems, or getting entangled in situations that wreak havoc in our spirit. A sign that something is wrong is being uncomfortable (unless you are working out!) Not the discomfort that comes from spiritual growth, I mean discomfort that tells your Spirit that something you are doing is NOT FOR YOU!
These examples of discomfort cause us to forfeit the Peace that God designs for us when we are in relationship with Him. When I’m without peace, I become restless. And of course, God starts to speak to me about what “doesn’t fit” when I’m trying to sleep! LOL! Peace means freedom from disturbance and quiet tranquility. We could all use the true meaning of peace in our lives. When you try to add something to your life and it becomes uncomfortable, the restlessness is God’s way of drawing you to him, and away from what “doesn’t fit!”
Check out this scripture from the message bible.
28-30″Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
God will allow us to be uncomfortable to find him. When you are walking in obedience to the Lord, you will find true freedom. It may not be overnight, but as you get rid of what doesn’t belong, you will become light as a feather without even going to the gym (Spiritually light….no way to escape the treadmill for the actual LBS!) When you are overwhelmed, God is saying, “Come to me and I will give you rest.” How simple is that!
